So, my roomies and I got into a debate about which is the lesser of two evils; Playhouse Disney or Trans TV (and local channel). I don't know what's sadder; the topic itself or the fact that we watch those two channels. Well anyway, on the schedule;
Bananas in Pajamas (insert obligatory dick joke here) and a series on local fairytales called
Dongeng. Anyway, the story being featured on the series is
Si Itik Buruk Rupa which translates to the
ugly duckling well, basically it's the anthropomorphic tale of the ugly duckling. The story goes is that, a young girl is born with a horrific skin disease and basically everyone in the village, her own two sisters included hates her- with the exception of her mother. Her widowed mother, inversely, dotes upon her.
Well, one day, she saves a young boy from drowning, and instead of thanking her, they all scream at her to stay away, and would've beaten her up if it wasn't for this 'handsome' young man (I'll complain about how so not good looking he is later) who saw everything and stuck up for her. It was the start of a beautiful friendship between the Fictional Man (FM)* and Ugly Duckling (UD).
Anyway, kid who was saved got sick with the mumps, and despite the doctor saying her sickness isn't contagious, the villagers refused to believe her and locked her in the stocks. Only FM and mommy stood up for her. Her sisters, jealous of the budding romance between UD and FM, threatened her into leaving the village, frightened, UD obliged. She then took shelter near a waterfall inside the forest.
Heartbroken with the disappearance of her beloved daughter, her mother died. Now, mothers are commonly believed to be the more holier of our two parents (apologies to my dear daddy) thus, it's not surprising, that when she died, the poor banished UD dreamt of her mother who promises everything will be alright.
As most fairytales, it ends with a happily ever after, UD got rid of her facial discolouration and marries her beloved FM who found her.
When my roomies and I first watched it, we thought, okay, typical feel good Cinderella type story, and as the story progressed, hey it ain't bad, of course the villagers were a tad bit too unreasonable at times, but that's aiiiiight. Then we began to enjoy it because, well, they were genuine, I mean the acting seems very genuine, the friendship between UD and FM seems very natural, but what I love especially was the bond between mother and daughter. It's bloody touching yo, when the mother died, we almost cried (though Chris and Paul would never admit it over their dead body). The best part is, we get hints that FM loved her even in her ugliness. The chick-flick lover in me gets all a flutter with that.
Now, unfortunately, the whole movie was spoiled at the end with all the damn cliche. My roomies argue that the majority of the Indos insist on happy endings, I get that, but the plot ending.. well here's the simple list:
- When the mother died, UD cried and then jumps to the pool as if to embrace her, and then laughs in joy as her skin clears. I hate the fact that she has this 180 mood swing all of a sudden, it would mean so much more if she cried and said she'ld rather have her disease than loose her mother. Rather then suddenly giggling and forgetting she lost her mother. *rolls eyes*
- Then there was the time FM found UD, she was already pretty and he proposed- should've done that earlier when she was still ugly. At least he could've told her he loved her when she was ugly. On the bright side, she rejected him...
- ...only to run back to him in a cooking bride contest his parents ran. The gastronomic version of the Cinderella ball. Yippee. She claims she wants to prove that she has more to offer than a pretty face. Oy vey.
So verdict; comparing this to the episode of
Bananas in Pajamas (how to count in shoes, Tita is 7 shoes tall!), bananas for the win yo! Which of course, Paul and Chris objects, on the grounds that they are waaay to cool to watch Playhouse Disney. Right... and Jimmy Neutron is just another animated feature.
